Top-cut Sweet Grass Hills calves backed by generations of Quality Angus genetics
Per CWT
Galata, Montana – 80 Black Angus and Black Whiteface Steer Calves at 675 lbs, shipping October 22, 2026.
This is an opportunity to buy one of the top sets of steer calves to come out of the Sweet Grass Hills country. These calves are the top cut sorted from 92 head and come from a closed herd that has been built around High Quality Black Angus genetics for generations. With 80% of the calf crop born in the first cycle of a 60-day calving season, buyers can expect a very uniform, high-quality load with the kind of consistency that is hard to find.
These calves are 100% Black and Black White face and come from a cow herd built for growth and power. The cows are deep-bodied, long-made, and big framed, weighing 1,500 to 1,600 lbs. This outfit has never shied away from using performance-oriented Angus bulls, selecting sires that add pounds, muscle, and growth while maintaining the maternal strength needed in a rugged Montana environment.
Sires originate from Whistling Winds Angus and Peterson Grain & Cattle, with muscling and performance serving as the primary selection criteria. The result is a set of calves with extra length, frame, and growth potential that should continue to add value whether headed to a backgrounding program or directly into the feedyard. These are growthy cattle that should finish with plenty of pounds and carcass value.
Running high in the Sweet Grass Hills on native mountain grass, these calves are developed in a real-world ranch environment and have demonstrated the ability to maintain flesh and condition while covering country. They are carrying a heavy-medium flesh condition and have been performing well throughout the grazing season.
The health program is solid and includes calfhood and pre-weaning vaccinations. Calves received Ralgro implant, Alpha C&D, One Shot BVD, and Multimin in the spring, followed by Vision 7 with Spur, Somnus, and One Shot BVD in the fall. Bull calves were banded at birth.
Cattle will be gathered from a 400-acre pasture, sorted off the cows, hauled approximately 22 miles, and weighed straight on the ground. If you're looking for a load of reputation calves with proven growth genetics, strong maternal backing, and the kind of quality that stands out in the country, this is a set worth serious consideration.
