Per CWT
Monida, Montana – 950 Black & Red Baldy Steer Calves at 550 lbs, shipping October 15–31.
This is a tremendous offering of Matador Ranch steer calves coming out of the Centennial Valley along the Montana-Idaho border. Selling in groups of 200–400 head, these steers represent one of the largest and most proven baldy calf programs in the West. Approximately 65% will be Black Baldies, 25% Red Baldies, and 10% will show more Hereford coloration, though none are straight Hereford cattle. There is also the possibility of a few Charolais-influenced calves finding their way into the offering as neighboring summer grazing allotments occasionally overlap.
These steers are 100% horned Hereford sired out of a unique cow herd that has been developed over more than 50 years. The cows are essentially a composite population carrying roughly two-thirds Angus and one-third Hereford influence, with generations of strategic crossbreeding designed to capture the strengths of both breeds. The result is a consistent, practical cow herd that combines maternal strength, fertility, longevity, and carcass quality with the frame, bone, muscle, and growth of Hereford genetics.
The calves exhibit tremendous hybrid vigor and have earned a reputation for versatility. They fit grass programs exceptionally well, carrying the frame and structure to add pounds efficiently, while feedlot buyers appreciate their ability to finish at heavy weights. These steers have been routinely fed to 1,500–1,600 lbs as calf-feds and continue to deliver the kind of performance expected from a long-established Matador breeding program. They are big-framed, deep-bodied cattle with the bone and capacity to keep growing.
Raised in the high mountain valleys east of Monida, these calves are developed under rugged range conditions where cattle must travel, forage, and thrive in a demanding environment. These are big country cattle and can be pretty flighty at first. However, they are too much hereford to be wild for long. after they've been in a feedlot long enough, they are very docile, maybe to a fault!
Dry conditions have begun to develop across the region, and if weather patterns do not improve, there is a possibility these calves could weigh somewhat lighter than projected at shipping.
Groups can be purchased in packages of 200–400 head. Contact Boe for delivery schedules and available group sizes.
