Description

Dell, Montana – 750 Black Baldy Steer Calves at 500 lbs, shipping early October.

This is an outstanding offering of Black Baldy steer calves coming from one of the largest and most proven commercial cowherds in southwest Montana. Selling out of a single location on a single shipping day, these calves offer buyers an opportunity to put together multiple uniform load lots of approximately 107 head each. The combination of quality, volume, and consistency is difficult to find in today's market.

These steers are 100% Angus sired out of cows carrying approximately two-thirds Hereford influence. The breeding program has been refined over decades to capture the strengths of both breeds—Hereford genetics contribute frame, bone, longevity, and growth, while Angus genetics add carcass quality, feed efficiency, and performance. The result is a set of practical, high-performing cattle with plenty of hybrid vigor.

Raised in the short-grass country surrounding Dell, they are typically on the greener side at shipping and have developed a strong reputation as excellent backgrounding and grass cattle. When carried through a yearling program, these steers have commonly come off grass weighing 850 to 950 lbs before continuing on to finish at weights exceeding 1,500 lbs. They have the frame and skeletal structure to keep growing while maintaining strong feeding performance.

This is a very good string of cattle in both quality and volume. The shipping process is efficient and well organized, with more than 1,500 pairs gathered on shipping day. Calves are sorted from the cows, sexed by two crews, sorted BEFORE the scale and weighed After the 800 heifers straight, so we get a good weigh up here. Steers are gathered starting at 7 am but don't start across the scale until 11-12:00, after that, the crew is quick and gets the cattle weighed, loaded and on the road by 2:30 in the afternoon. Buyers will appreciate the consistency and organization behind an offering of this size.

These calves have run lighter than projected in some recent years. While expectations are for them to meet the advertised weight, dry conditions could result in lighter shipping weights. For buyers looking for greener cattle with additional upside and growth potential, that may create additional opportunity.
