Big Timber, Montana – 105 Black Angus & SimAngus Steer Calves at 630 lbs, shipping late October to early November.
This is the biggest, best sort of 105 steers from 130 home-raised calves at Metcalf Ranch. Predominantly black hided with less than 10% red influence, these are a stout, powerful set of reputation calves offering the frame, muscle, and uniformity buyers expect from a long-established Montana program. At 630 pounds, they are well suited for both backgrounding and finishing programs with the kind of growth genetics to carry pounds efficiently.
The cow herd is made up primarily of Black Angus, Black Simmental, and a small number of Baldy females, creating excellent hybrid vigor while maintaining a consistent, uniform calf crop. Sires are chosen with an emphasis on muscling and performance. The result is a big-framed, deep-bodied set of calves with plenty of shape and natural performance.
These calves are the top end of the steer crop and offer an impressive level of consistency. Raised on native Montana pasture, they are healthy, rugged cattle.
Approximately half of the calves are hauled 160 miles and weighed straight the evening prior to shipping, while the remaining calves are gathered, sorted, and weighed straight on shipping day. The ranch has marketed cattle this way for several years, and buyers have consistently been pleased with the overall weigh-up.
